“Livin the Mission” (Loving Those That Are Different)

Greetings,

I hope your 2011 is starting off well.  The first part of 2011 is about "Livin’ the Mission."  We are connecting the mission of White Branch "to make Jesus Christ known, loved and obeyed" to the book of 1 John.  This week I will be preaching from 1 John 2:7-11 on "Loving Those That Are Different From Us."

This past week I preached from 1 John 2:1-6 about how we need to know Jesus if we are going to become like Him.  The way I advocated that we get to know Him is through reading the Gospels.  This week I gave four sections of the gospel to choose from to get to know Jesus better.  Those were:

Matthew 5-7 (The Sermon on the Mount)

Mark 1-3 (The Beginning of Mark’s Gospel)

Luke 4-6 (The Beginning of Jesus’ Public Ministry)

John 2-4 (The temple, the wedding, Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman at the well)

I believe if we get to know the real Jesus it will surprise us.  I wonder, in my own life as well as in the lives of many Christians, if we get closer to becoming a Pharisee than Jesus?  Read these accounts and ask yourself that question.  Let us strive not to just be good, religious Christians, let us strive to truly become like Jesus.

I am starting a seminar series at the church this spring on Saturday January 29 with a seminar on goal setting:  "How to Set Goals and Achieve Them."  This seminar will help you to understand the value of goal setting, how to set better goals, how to overcome obstacles and build momentum in goal setting and when, if ever, it is a good time to abandon your goals or to set new ones.  The seminar will be at White Branch Church from 9a-12noon.

Other upcoming events include:

Bible Study Thursday night at 7 pm.

Young Adult trip to Ball State vs. Central Michigan basketball game.  If you consider yourself a young adult or know a young adult let them know about this opportunity to have fun with others their age.  The game starts at 2 pm and we will be meeting at the church at 12:15 and leaving at 12:30.  The total cost is $10 for general admission plus parking.  There will be a bowling night coming up soon for young adults.

Child Protection Training Saturday January 22 from 9a-12p.  This will help us to better understand how to protect the children, our church and ourselves from child abuse.  We would like all of our leadership and children’s workers to benefit from this training and plan to have a second option sometime.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
